The Gender of Genre
Purpose:
To determine
what percent of Billboard top artists were male versus female.
Source(s):
Billboard
100 year-end Top Artists charts 2011-2020 (https://billboard.com/charts/year-end) (n
= 850). I manually scraped the information and used my personal knowledge,
Wikipedia, and images to determine gender. There might be an error or two in
coding. Corrections are welcome.
Data is available here (https://u.nu/kkIMw).
Highlights
and Considerations:
•
Billboard rankings are based on digital songs
sales, streaming, radio airplay, touring, and social engagement.
•
“Top Artists” were defined as lead singer(s)
or primary composer for instrumentals. Bands wherein artist(s) gender was
ambiguous were excluded (e.g., mixed-gender duos, choirs, orchestras; n
= 33) and were common in Classical (n = 16) and Christian (n =
12) music.
•
Across above genres, women comprised 20% of
rankings (n♀ = 163; n♂ = 653) and 20% of unique artists (n♀
= 64; n♂ = 249).
•
Not all genres are shown (just the most
popular), and two genres did not have data dating back to 2011 (i.e.,
Christian, n = 70; Dance & EDM, n = 79).

I made the graphic in Excel and a few edits and tweaks in PowerPoint.
