What percent Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares are still open?
Purpose:
To investigate how successfully Gordon Ramsay was at saving restaurants in his U.K. reality show “Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares” (2004-2007) and the American version, “Kitchen Nightmares” (2007-2014).
Source(s):
I extracted restaurant names from each episode (n = 99) and used a variety of measures to investigate if they are still operational. I first used fan-run websites to generate a list of restaurants that have been reported as closed (e.g., www.kitchennightmaresupdates.com or
www.realitytvrevisited.com). Of those remaining theoretically still open kitchens, I checked google maps listings for the restaurant, looked for restaurant websites, looked for restaurant Facebook pages, catering services, and searched for online discussions that often crop up about reality show restaurants. Here is an excel file with the results.
While there were several kitchens temporarily closed for COVID, I counted these as still operational. I'm fairly confident none of the restaurants determined to be "closed" had anything to do with COVID 19.
If anyone has corrections to do with a restaurants' status, please let me know below!
Highlights:
- Ramsay visited 99 kitchens across 122 episodes (there were some two-part episodes or revisits) (U.K.: 22 kitchens, 30 episodes; U.S.: 77 Kitchens, 92 episodes).
- 19% of kitchens are confirmed still operational (U.K. = 18%, U.S. = 19%).
- I am not claiming this is a good or bad success rate. Without a control group it is impossible to know if his intervention has an effect on failure rates (and is likely impossible to know due to how restaurants are selected to be on the show).
- From my anecdotal perception, Kitchen Nightmares often select establishments that are on the brink of closure and seemingly the worst-case-scenario. If this is true, any remaining open would be a significant win.
- It also seems reasonable that restaurants featured on Kitchen Nightmares would see a bump in patronage due to being on a popular television show. Therefore, just being on the show likely has implications for success or failure regardless of Ramsay's direct actions or advice.

I made the graphic in Excel and a few edits and tweaks in PowerPoint.
